KENT, Ohio - The Kent State lacrosse team took on Cincinnati at Dix Stadium on Friday, falling to the visiting Bearcats, 17-11. The loss drops the Golden Flashes' record to 2-5 on the season.
Despite playing a larger school in Cincinnati, Kent State came out with intensity early in this one. For the second game in a row, the Flashes set the pace offensively, going down the field and scoring on their opening possession on a goal by Abby Jones, assisted by Morgan Kubicki. This gave Kent State a 1-0 lead, and over the course of the game, the Flashes would go back and forth with the Bearcats, trading blow for blow for the majority of regulation.
In the second quarter, with the score knotted up at five-all, Kent State's Megan Kozar found the back of the net to give the Flashes the lead once more. Jackie Wolford would then punch one in minutes later, capping off a 4-0 Flashes run. With 6:34 to go in the second quarter, Kent State had a two-goal lead.
But Cincinnati would surge back, scoring the next five and taking the lead away from the Flashes, a lead that Kent State would ultimately be unable to regain. The Bearcats began to pull away in the fourth quarter, going on another 5-0 run from 11:36 to 0:58. Jackie Wolford scored her third total goal of the game with 16 seconds remaining, but the outcome of the game was already sealed. Cincinnati came away with the victory, 17-11.
Other Flashes goal-scorers not yet mentioned include Kenzie Sklar, Cayla Jungwirth, and Kelli Bailey. Picking up assists in the game were Morgan Kubicki, Lexi Piekarski, and Abby Jones (two).
One area that caused trouble for the Flashes was yellow cards, of which Kent State received four, compared to Cincinnati's zero. The Bearcats were able to take advantage of two of these opportunities, scoring woman-up goals twice in the fourth quarter.
Cincinnati also simply took more shots than Kent State, 42-19, including nearly double the amount of shots on-goal, 28-15. The Flashes had more saves than the Bearcats, 11-4, but also had more turnovers, 19-16. Cincinnati had more draw controls, 19-12, as well as free-position shots, 6-4. Both sides had identical amounts of ground balls and draw controls.
Next up on the schedule for Kent State is a trip to Central Michigan on Thursday. That game is set to take place at 3 p.m.
