
Women’s Basketball Beats Rival Zips in Impressive Performance

KENT, Ohio — Kent State bounced back from a loss Wednesday evening with a wire-to-wire 73-51 victory over rival Akron at the M.A.C. Center on Saturday.
The Golden Flashes (16-8, 11-3 MAC) have held the Zips to 60 points or fewer in every contest during the current four-game rivalry winning streak.
Kent State shot 26-of-49 from the field for 53.1%, its best accuracy against a Division I opponent this season. Redshirt senior Katie Shumate scored a game-high with 18 points and was joined in double-figures by freshman Janae Tyler (16) and junior Jenna Batsch (12).
The Flashes took control for good with a 12-0 run midway through the first period. The lead reached 16 in the opening minute of the second quarter, but Akron shot better than 50% the rest of the half to get within 39-30 at halftime.
The defense intensified after the break and held the visiting Zips to 21 points on 8-of-26 (28.6%) shooting during the second half.
Kent State will visit Eastern Michigan on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
