KENT, Ohio – Kent State lost a volleyball match to Central Michigan, 3-1 (23-25, 12-25, 25-21, 18-25), as the second half of Mid-American Conference play began on Thursday.
The Golden Flashes (8-13, 3-7 MAC) were the first to 20 in a highly competitive opening set that had 13 ties and seven lead changes. The Chippewas won the next four points before a service error and solo block by senior Mackenzie McGuire brought Kent State within 23-22. A service error put CMU back ahead by two and redshirt sophomore Adalynn Ginley kept the set alive with a kill, but the Chippewas responded with a kill to put the set away.
After struggling in the second set to fall behind 0-2, the Flashes never trailed in the third. Freshman Macie Moreland was nearly flawless in the set with six kills on seven attempts, and Kent State posted a .370 hitting percentage overall to extend the match.
Central Michigan's attack bounced back and hit at a .364 clip in the fourth set to close out the contest.
Moreland finished with a team-high 11 kills. McGuire, junior Mercedez Brown and sophomore Nadia Miller were right behind with 10 apiece. McGuire also led the Flashes with 12 digs.
Kent State and Central Michigan are scheduled to battle at the M.A.C. Center again on Friday at 6 p.m.
