KENT, Ohio โ The Kent State women's lacrosse team hosted their third consecutive game at Dix Stadium on Monday afternoon, falling 14-7 to ACC opponent California.
The Golden Flashes (3-5) fell behind early thanks to two quick goals by the Golden Bears. A first quarter goal by Zayda Crumpton cut into the lead, making it a 2-1 game at the first quarter intermission. Kent State opened the second period with two goals in the first four minutes to grab a 3-2 lead over visiting California as Katlyn Binnix grabbed her fifth goal of the game before Crumpton assisted Lizzie Lundeen to put the Flashes in front. The Golden Bears responded with four goals to take a 6-3 lead into the half.
Kent State opened the second half strong as Riley Floyd opened the scoring just one minute in through another Crumpton assist for her sixth goal of the season. California responded with strength, scoring seven consecutive goals to end the third quarter and open the fourth as they took a 13-4 lead with eight minutes remaining. Kent State responded with an unanswered three-goal run of their own to cut into the Golden Bears' lead. First, Haleigh Greenberg found the back of the net from a Sidney Dering assist before freshman Kenzie Gash scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Peyton Gellin wrapped up the scoring for Kent State with an unassisted goal of her own. The run proved to be too little, too late as California added a final goal to cement a 14-7 road win.
Crumpton led the Flashes with five draw controls while Allie Bradley and Gellin each had two. Crumpton and Binnix put sustained pressure on the Golden Bears, leading Kent State with three and two caused turnovers respectively. In goal, Sydney Davis recorded six saves in 41 minutes of action.
The Flashes have a quick turnaround as they hit the road to face Radford on Wednesday, March 12. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
