MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Kent State lacrosse team opened MAC play on Sunday afternoon with a thrilling 10-9 overtime victory on the road at Central Michigan.
The Flashes (5-5, 1-0) were led by junior midfielder Peyton Gellin, who scored four goals in the game, including the game-winner in overtime as Kent State claimed the win in their first overtime contest of 2025.
After a slow first quarter, where the Chippewas grabbed the only goal to hold a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes, the Flashes' offense kicked into gear in the second quarter. Central Michigan established a 2-0 lead midway through the second period before Allie Lee and Morgan Halli each found the back of the net to tie the game at two goals apiece. The Chippewas responded strongly, closing the half with three goals in the final two minutes to take a 5-2 lead into halftime.
Kent State responded to the end of half adversity with a dominant start to the third quarter. The Flashes were able to mount a comeback and take the lead with four unanswered goals to begin the period. Gellin grabbed two goals in two minutes, followed soon by a Riley Floyd effort assisted by Megan Cook to knot the game at 5-5 with over nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. Five minutes later, Zayda Crumpton capped the Flashes scoring run with her nineteenth goal of the season to give Kent State a 6-5 advantage for their first lead of the game.
After Central Michigan scored to end the third quarter and tie the game at six entering the final quarter, the Flashes put together another offensive run, scoring two goals in a three-minute span. Gellin completed her hat trick to regain the lead for Kent State, before assisting Lizzie Lundeen's team-high 22nd goal of the season. Floyd scored her second of the game, assisted by Lee, to give the Flashes a 9-6 lead with ten minutes remaining. The Chippewas showed impressive fight, mounting a three-goal comeback in the final seven minutes of regulation to force overtime.
Despite a disappointing finish to regulation, the Flashes regained their composure in overtime. Sophomore goalkeeper made a crucial save on a free position shot before Gellin ended the game by finding the back of the net through a Riley Floyd assist to clinch a 10-9 win for Kent State.
The Flashes will look to improve on their 1-0 start in MAC play as they return to Dix Stadium next Sunday, March 23, to face Detroit Mercy at 1 p.m.
