KENT, Ohio – The Kent State lacrosse team returned to Dix Stadium for their second game of MAC play on Sunday, falling 13-10 to Detroit Mercy. The Flashes (5-6) fall to 1-1 in the MAC after defeating Central Michigan on the road to open conference play last weekend.
A back-and-forth first quarter saw the Flashes come from behind to hold a 3-2 lead after the opening 15. Allie Lee and Lizzie Lundeen responded to an opening goal by the Titans to give Kent State a 2-1 lead eight minutes into the contest. Detroit Mercy responded to level the game before Morgan Halli gave the Flashes the lead to end the quarter.
The Flashes opened the second quarter with three unanswered goals to build a four-goal cushion with six minutes remaining in the half. Zayda Crumpton got Kent State underway in the quarter before Riley LaVogue found the back of the net on a Katlyn Binnix assist. Binnix then grabbed a goal of her own to give the Flashes a 6-2 advantage. The Titans found the final goal of the first half and the opening goal of the second half to cut into the Flashes' lead before Crumpton opened Kent State's second-half account to make the score 7-4 in the Flashes' favor. The Titans found a goal late in the third quarter, which was quickly responded to by Lundeen to establish an 8-5 advantage for Kent State.
Detroit Mercy took control of the game in the late third quarter and early fourth quarter with six unanswered goals to grab a three-goal advantage of their own with just eight minutes remaining in the game. Crumpton completed her hat trick with seven minutes to play, but the Titans were able to crush the Flashes' rally with two more goals to build a 13-9 lead with seconds remaining in the game. Halli found her second goal of the game before the final horn, but it proved to be a consolation as Detroit Mercy escaped Dix Stadium with a 13-10 win.
Now at 1-1 in MAC play, the Flashes have a ten-day rest before heading to Erie, Pennsylvania for a non-conference clash at Mercyhurst on Wednesday, April 2. Kent State returns to the 330 the following weekend for a much-anticipated rivalry matchup at Akron on Sunday, April 6.
