AKRON, Ohio – The Kent State lacrosse team returned to MAC play on Sunday as they made the short trek to InfoCision Stadium for a rivalry showdown, falling 14-9 to Akron. A back-and-forth contest was highlighted by a heroic performance from Sydney Davis in goal, who recorded 11 saves while playing all 60 minutes for the Flashes.
Kent State (6-7, 1-2) got off to a slow start in the anticipated wagon wheel matchup, conceding the game's opening four goals to the Zips as the Flashes faced a 4-0 deficit at the end of the first quarter. The Flashes responded with strength as the second quarter commenced, with Morgan Halli getting the team on the board just two minutes into the period. As the game wound closer to halftime, Kent State continued to cut into the deficit until it no longer existed, as a three-goal flurry in the final two minutes of the half leveled the contest. Zayda Crumpton opened the trio of goals before Katlyn Binnix found the back of the net just 19 seconds later through a Haleigh Greenberg assist. Crumpton then found her second goal of the game with just 65 seconds remaining in the first half to level the score at four goals apiece heading into the half.
Akron tapped into their first-quarter form as the second half began, firing five unanswered goals to build a 9-4 lead just five minutes into the third quarter. Halli spearheaded the Flashes' response with her second goal of the game ahead of Lizzie Lundeen putting her name on the scoresheet to reduce the Akron lead to 9-6. A woman-up goal by the Zips ended the Kent State scoring spurt as Akron took a 10-6 lead into the fourth quarter. After the Zips grabbed the opening goal of the fourth quarter, Lundeen scored her second of the game via a Crumpton assist to cut the Akron lead to 11-7 with ten minutes remaining. Shortly after, Crumpton completed her hat trick to once again reduce the deficit to three goals. Kent State's comeback effort was cut short as the Zips added two unanswered goals to develop a strong 13-8 lead with less than two minutes remaining. Allie Lee scored the Flashes' final goal of the day, proving to be a consolation as Akron added one more before the final buzzer to secure the 14-9 victory.
Crumpton's hat trick improved her team-high season goal total to 30, while the pair from Lundeen improved her total to 26. Midfielder Sidney Dering accumulated four draw controls, surpassing the 100 milestone in her collegiate career, to go along with two caused turnovers. Davis' third double-digit save effort in the last four games brings her season total to 73 saves.
The Flashes have a quick turnaround as the team prepares for their final midweek contest of the season this Wednesday, April 9, at Louisville. Opening draw from Kentucky is set for noon.
