
Rockets’ Late Run Halts Flashes Win Streak

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo closed with an 11-2 run to give Kent State a 59-53 setback on Wednesday evening, ending a four-game winning streak.
The Golden Flashes (9-11, 4-5 MAC) played smothering defense for the opening 20 minutes, forcing 14 turnovers and holding their host to 8-of-26 shooting, and closed the half with a 13-4 run to lead 28-20 at halftime.
Toledo knocked down six of its first nine shots in the third quarter to go ahead, but sophomore Emory Klatt scored on the next two possessions to regain the lead. After the Rockets went back ahead by three, junior Riley Rismiller scored the final three points to tie it at 41-41 after 30 minutes.
Kent State scored the first six points in the fourth period before going to scoreless for be than three minutes and falling behind by one point. Senior Dionna Gray provided an immediate answer with a driving layup. Freshman Anna Campanelli followed with a basket on the next possession to put the Flashes ahead 51-48 with 3:27 remaining.
Toledo's Ella Weaver scored the next eight points to give the host the lead and Rismiller brought Kent State within three by sinking a pair of free throws with just under a minute to play. After forcing a turnover, the Flashes had a three-pointer to tie roll around the rim and out. Kent State missed its final five shots of the night.
Rismiller finished with a team-high 13 points and Campanelli was right behind with 12. Gray, Klatt and junior Mya Babbitt added eight points each.
Kent State will begin a three-game home stand at the M.A.C. Center with a nationally televised game against Ball State on Sunday, Feb. 1. Tip is scheduled for noon.
