KENT, Ohio — Kent State's Dionna Gray and Mya Babbitt were ready for the national spotlight and delivered memorable performances during a 101-91 setback to Ball State that was broadcast on CBS Sports Network on Sunday.
Gray nearly recorded the second triple-double in program history and finished the contest with a career-high 23 points to go with nine rebounds and nine assists. Babbitt knocked down four three-pointers and converted several difficult driving baskets on her way to 28 points, which is two away from her career-high.
Facing their largest deficit of the first half, the Golden Flashes (9-12, 4-6 MAC) scored seven in a row to get within two points before a whistle in the closing seconds put the Cardinals at the free throw, where they converted one shot to lead 46-43 at the break.
An 11-0 burst over less than two minutes of action during the third period allowed Ball State to stretch the lead to 17, its largest of the day.
Kent State closed the quarter strong and trailed by 12 entering the fourth quarter. The Flashes continued to chip away and had an open look from deep that would have brought them within five with just over two minutes remaining, but it was off the mark.
Freshman Caitlyn Holmes totaled career-best totals of 11 points and four steals as Kent State's bench posted a 26-10 scoring advantage.
The Flashes will continue a three-game home stand at the M.A.C. Center on Wednesday, Feb. 4 against Bowling Green at 7 p.m.
