Youngstown, OHIO - The Kent State Lacrosse team will return to Mid-American Conference play on Saturday in a key conference contest against the Youngstown State Penguins. The game is set to begin at noon at Farmer's National Bank Field.
Last Time Out
The Kent State Lacrosse team pulled off one of the best comebacks in program history on Friday night scoring seven goals in the final eight minutes to defeat the San Diego State Aztecs by a score of 11-10.Â
The final goal came off a buzzer-beater from junior attacker Haleigh Greenberg who got the rebound off of a saved shot from Meghan Haddow and put the ball in the back of the net herself as time expired.
After being outscored 5-1 in the first quarter, the Flashes tightened the gap in the second quarter with three goals to cut the halftime deficit to two at the break in a 6-4 game.
After three goals in the third quarter, and one early in the fourth for the Aztecs, the chances for a victory by the Flashes seemed small. KSU trailed 10-4, but the offense went into another gear to score seven goals in an eight-minute span. Senior Zayda Crumpton accounted for three of those goals on that run.
Crumpton finished the game with four goals while senior attacker Lizzie Lundeen also produced three goals and two assists in the win. Junior Morgan Halli contributed two goals and two assists.
The Golden Flashes got contributions from all over the field on the defensive end as Davanee McNairy, Haddow and Anna Zucconi each had a pair of caused turnovers.Â
Haddow led the team with four ground balls, while Zucconi and Riley Floyd each contributed three. Kent State junior goalkeeper Sydney Davis had another great game in net as she finished with 10 saves in the win.
Scouting Youngstown State
The Penguins have started the season with a 1-9 record, but have played very tough competition to start the year. Their lone victory of the season came in a low-scoring conference victory over defending regular-season MAC Co-Champion Robert Morris by a score of 5-4. They also have one common opponent with the Flashes this year as they took on the Cincinnati Bearcats last week and were defeated by a score of 22-3.
Sophomore midfielder Claire Baenziger leads the team in goals this season with 25 which is good for top five in the conference so far. Junior attacker Ava Kreutzer is second on the team in points with 11 off of eight goals and three assists.
Leading the way defensively for YSU is sophomore defensive midfiler Mackenzie Flannigan who has 20 caused turnovers this season. That puts her at second in the MAC right behind Kent State sophomore Anna Zucconi. Flannigan also has 33 ground balls(2nd in the MAC) and 29 draw controls this season.
Series History
Saturday's matchup will mark the eighth all-time meeting between the Penguins and the Golden Flashes as In-state rivals in the MAC. Youngstown State currently holds the series lead by a count of 4-3, including a win over Kent State a year ago by a score of 13-11. The Golden Flashes last beat YSU in 2024 in a 16-15 thriller.
Up Next
After a conference matchup with Youngstown State, the Golden Flashes will turn their attention to MAC opponent Robert Morris. The Flashes will take on the Colonials as they will honor their senior class for an unforgettable four years with the program. That game is set to begin at 1 P.M. on Saturday inside Dix Stadium.
