LORETTO, Pa. - On Saturday, the Kent State women's lacrosse team traveled to Pennsylvania to play Saint Francis. The Golden Flashes took care of business and came away with the victory, 17-14.
Kent State was led in scoring by senior and team captain Megan Kozar, whose five goals off the bench served as the catalyst to the Flashes' victory. Sophomore Jackie Wolford contributed four goals of her own, leading the team with 25 goals and 27 points on the season.
After getting out to a 1-0 lead to begin the game on a goal by Danielle Hernandez, Saint Francis would never regain that lead, trailing from 7:25 onward. In that respect, this was one of Kent State's most successful games of the season, given the fact that they were able to play from out in front for the vast majority of regulation.
But that doesn't mean that this win came easy. The Flashes had to battle for all 60 minutes and keep their feet on the gas pedal, because the Red Flash of Saint Francis would not give up easily. Saint Francis got its fair share of goals offensively, with Amanda Heidt leading the team in that category on the day with five scored. What set this game apart for the Flashes though was the fact that they never allowed Saint Francis to go on any long scoring streaks. Those have hurt the Flashes earlier in the season, but head coach Brianne Tierney's team never let the Red Flash score more than two goals in a row at any point on Saturday.
And that made a difference for Kent State, as did their defensive play. Junior goalkeeper Madison Flannigan had 10 saves in this one and earned herself and the Flashes a third win of the season. Saint Francis didn't fare as well on defense though, as they allowed the Golden Flashes to out-shoot them, 34-29, and to take more shots on goal, 29-24. Kent State succumbed to fewer turnovers than the Red Flash as well, 15-11.
With a nice win to stuff in their duffel bags, Kent State now heads back home, to prepare for a home game next Saturday. Conference opponent Detroit Mercy will be coming to town at 4 p.m.
