KENT, Ohio – The Kent State lacrosse team opened their home slate on Sunday with the squad's first match of the season within the confines of Dix Stadium against Cincinnati. The Bearcats played spoiler in the home opener, notching a decisive 15-4 victory over the Flashes.
Kent State started on the front foot in the first quarter, grabbing the game's first goal through the stick of Riley Floyd via an assist by Megan Cook less than four minutes into the contest. It was Floyd's third goal of the season, after recording her first two in Thursday's win over Presbyterian. As the first quarter wore on, Cincinnati was able to respond with goals around the nine-minute mark and four-minute mark to take a 2-1 lead into the second period of play.
The second quarter was all Bearcats as they outscored the Flashes 4-0 in the second 15. Cincinnati found their first goal of the period within just 30 seconds, setting the tone for a second quarter which saw them establish a 6-1 halftime advantage.
The Flashes started the second half on a positive note, similar to the start of the game. After four minutes, Emily Bond found the back of the net for her second goal of the season to cut Cincinnati's advantage to 6-2. After the Bearcats responded with a goal, Kent State was able to fire back again through Morgan Halli, whose unassisted effort made the score 7-3 with ten minutes remaining in the third quarter. Cincinnati responded emphatically to the Kent State push, netting five unanswered goals to end the third quarter with a 12-3 lead.
The final period of play began by following a similar script to the end of the third quarter. The Bearcats notched three goals in a five-minute span to increase their advantage to 15-3. The Flashes found the back of the net one more time through Haleigh Greenberg, her fifth goal of the season, but it proved to be too little, too late as it was the final goal of a contest that ended 15-4 in Cincinnati's favor.
The Flashes have a quick turnaround, as they will head to Bucknell on Tuesday, February 25, to face the Bison in Lewisburg, before returning home for three consecutive home contests.
