
Lacrosse overtime victory over Duquesne

Pittsburgh, PA – The Kent State lacrosse team won in overtime against Duquesne, 16-15, this afternoon.
The Golden Flashes struck first with a goal by Kenzie Sklar less than a minute in the first quarter. The Dukes responded quickly tying the score 1-1, two minutes later. After Duquesne took the lead, Allie Lee scored tying the score up again 2-2. Sklar gave the Flashes a huge advantage and scored three goals back-to-back making the score 5-2. After the quarter, Kent State led in shots 8-7, with the score 5-4.
Going into the second quarter, the Dukes tied the score 5-5 after two minutes. Later in the quarter, Sidney Dering helped the Golden Flashes tie the score 6-6 with an assist by Peyton Gellin. Then Dering scored again giving Kent State a one goal lead. The quarter ended 8-6 after Gellin scored her first goal of the season.
In the third quarter, Duquesne's Chloe Holmes was able to score her second goal of game taking their team one goal short of the Flashes, 8-7. After a yellow card on Kent State, the Dukes were able to tie the score again making it 8-8. Duquesne was able to take the lead, 9-8, after a free position goal with seven minutes left in the quarter. After three unanswered goals from the Dukes, Allie Lee and Jackie Wolford each scored for the Golden Flashes, ending the quarter 12-10 in favor of Duquesne.
The Dukes continued their advantage in the final quarter by taking their lead 13-10. Sklar helped pick up the momentum by scoring her fifth goal of the game with 10 minutes left. Shortly after, Wolford scored back-to-back goals tying the score 13-13. Battling once again for the lead, Zayda Crumpton scored to tie it up 14-14. With one minute left, Sklar scored in response to the Dukes goal making it 15-15 at the end of regulation.
In overtime, Kent State had the advantage after a yellow card on Duquesne. Wolford scored the game-winning goal with an assist by Sklar. The Golden Flashes led in shots (36-34) and draw controls (18-15). Goalkeeper Taylor Monturo had five saves and Madison Flannigan secured six saves.
Up next, Kent State travels to Indiana for a matchup against Butler on Saturday Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.
